Jessica is a Construction Project Coordinator for Medxcel, serving the Kansas/Oklahoma region. In her role, Jessica coordinates capital projects for her region’s construction team. She ensures there is alignment and communication with all involved departments, and that construction software systems are updated to streamline all aspects of construction projects.

Describe the responsibilities of your role.

I’m responsible for supporting our construction teams in Kansas and Oklahoma. Our sites are spread out geographically and most are in rural settings. Our team spends a lot of time traveling to the various locations to oversee jobs. We oversee all capital projects, whether it’s replacing a piece of medical equipment, refreshing or updating a space, or working on a new build. My day-to-day responsibilities include a wide range of tasks that allow me to support my team in their work. I support the project managers with administrative tasks, allowing them to devote more time to ensuring that their projects run smoothly, safely, and on schedule. I assist in facilitating communication from all involved parties and I help by generating reports, tracking, and analyzing project data.
 

Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.

I have worked at this hospital for over 40 years in a variety of roles; my path certainly wasn’t one I planned. Over that time I’ve had the privilege of working as a radiology clerk, (before x-rays were digital), in the ED, in-patient registration, centralized outpatient scheduling, human resources, employee health, surgery scheduling, nurse education, case management, and I was an executive assistant for fifteen years before joining Medxcel almost six years ago. When Medxcel came on with our site I chose to transition to Medxcel into a coordinator position. When Medxcel developed the project coordinator role to support construction, I was pretty much a perfect fit for it, and I’ve been doing this for the past three years.
 

What training and development opportunities have you taken advantage of? 

I have taken the Associated General Contractors of America (ACG) Project Manager Development Program course. I learned a lot about how we do things and how projects are managed. It was really beneficial and I’m excited that Medxcel supports our career development in so many ways. There are a multitude of development and career opportunities available to Medxcel associates.
 

What is the best part of your job?

The people here and the long-term relationships I have with them are truly the best part of my job. No matter your role, it takes a special type of person to serve in the healthcare environment; we do it because we want to be of service to others. Over the years I have learned that the healthcare environment is filled with wonderful people; I love working here alongside our associates and those we serve.
 

How would you describe the Medxcel culture?

My career journey has been one of change, and I’ve always taken the attitude of embracing change and the opportunities it provides. Every change opens another door, and each opportunity can be what you choose to make of it. I tell others that if they’re looking for a place where people really care about one another, Medxcel is that place. Our associates really care about what they do and truly have a service mindset.
